What happens to the R350 SRD Sassa grant now?

South Africa announced that they have ended their national state of disaster after the Covid 19 pandemic.  This is primarily good news for South Africans.  But what happens to the R350 SRD Sassa grant now?

However, many people are wondering what will happen now with the R350 grant.  Even if they have listened to the president’s speech, they might still not understand if the grant will continue until the end of March 2023, as announced earlier this year.  Or if the grant is going to stop after 30 days.  Here is everything we know about the grant and what will happen with it now.

The R350 SRD Sassa grant falls under the national state of disaster

The first thing that we know is that the R350 SRD Sassa grant was instated with the national state of disaster.  So, people who were negatively influenced during the pandemic could get some money for their basic needs.

Now, the national state of a disaster ended.  Everything done under the national state of disaster is gone or will be gone after 30 days.  Basically, the lockdown is gone, and we will get back to our everyday lives at the end of April 2022.  This after more than 700 days under a national state of disaster.

Will the R350 SRD Sassa grant also stop after 30 days?

This is a very important question.  Will the R350 SRD Sassa grant also stop after the 30 days, like some other lockdown rules?

There are two aspects under the national state of disaster that won’t change.  They will remove it from the state of disaster to ensure that people can still get these benefits.  One of these benefits is the R350 grant.  It will be renamed and published under another type of grant.  Meaning that it will still continue till the end of March 2023 at the moment.  There are rumors that it might be made permanent.

Explained what will happen after the end of April 2022

Let us explain more.  With the announcement, the national state of disaster has ended on 5th April 2022.  Lockdown is gone, and most of the rules and regulations are gone.

  • There are three lockdown or national state of disaster rules that remain for 30 days.
  • Then it will fall away automatically.  However, the licenses and the R350 SRD Sassa grant will not fall away.
  • It will be removed from the state of disaster act and renamed.
  • Meaning that it won’t fall away with all the other lockdown rules and regulations.

So, at the moment, you don’t have to worry about not getting your SRD grant anymore.

Announced that you can still apply for the R350 SRD Sassa grant 30 days after it changed

Before you can get too excited, you need to know something.  COGTA Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said that you will only be able to apply for the R350 SRD Sassa grant for 30 days after it was removed from the national state of disaster act.

You can still apply for it after the 30 days that the SRD is removed from the act.  What will happen after the 30 days is still unknown.  So, if you are qualifying for the grant, it is recommended that you apply for the grant as soon as possible.

Recap about the Sassa grant

Let’s recap.  The R350 SRD Sassa grant is for people that don’t receive an income during the lockdown.  They instated the grant under the National state of disaster act.  The state of disaster has ended, and we are going back to everyday living.

R350 grant to be ‘removed’ from National Disaster Act: What does it mean? (thesouthafrican.com)

This actually means that the SRD grant should end immediately as well.  However, they are removing the grant from the state of disaster, and you will still receive your grant until March next year.  This is the only important thing you need to know if you already get your grant each month.  For those who still need to apply for the grant, we don’t know what will happen.
